SLUGGERNUT
a short story by me

These are pictures of things that I, or someone I know, have made with their own two hands. They are some of my most favorite, cherished possessions.

My father commissioned an artist to do this replica of Salvador Dali's painting Woman at the Window. He did this as a house warming gift for me, upon our move to Portland, because while I was in NY I put Dali's painting in my Snapshots section and commented on how I felt like the girl in the photo, looking through the window at a place she'd rather be and waiting for my moment to jump in. It was the most thoughtful gift I've ever received.

My mother used to make pottery and weavings. She was brilliantly talented with them and for xmas a few years ago I asked for one as a gift. She hasn't made a new one in well over a decade but her house is full of the ones she did all those years ago so she gifted me with one of my favorites. I have to say, once I hung it on my wall I felt a little more like I was home.

A girlfriend of mine was taking a photography class in college and needed to do a project showing contrasts. She had the idea to take a light and dark photo of me. The dark, pictured here, was taken with me in a towel as to appear nude. My hair is down and I'm smearing makeup all down my face. The background image has changed to a darker one as well and the lighting was dimmed. About a year ago we were having a party when a friend knocked into the picture sending it falling to the ground. the glass cracked in a few places and I thought they were so appropriate I never replaced it.

A friend of ours is a painter. He used to do some pretty twisted stuff, but somehow we ended up with a couple of his sushi pieces.

My girlfriend made me this doll for my birthday one year. I loved it but didn't really know what to do with it so I asked if she would be offended if I nailed it to the wall, as I was in need of more wall art. She approved and for a long time this doll was nailed through the forehead on the wall. Here she takes the place of a plant that I just couldn't keep alive. She's a trooper, this doll.

My girlfriend Vanessa also made this doll, this time for Adam. It's dressed similarly to the way Adam used to dress while performing with one of his bands. I suppose she anticipated the nail question because the piece of paper pinned to him says,

I bought this nightstand for about five dollars at a garage sale. It was plain wood and rather dull. I applied a bright red coat of paint and decoupaged pinup art over the top and sides. It's one of my favorite pieces of furniture.
